Cape Dutch Braai + Bar opened its doors in fall 2015 from restaurateur Justin Anthony and hospitality group True Story Brands, deriving an unforgettable menu and interior design from the influence of South African wine country.

Cape Dutch provides a modern South African atmosphere and chef experience blended with European technique, with an open-faced grill as a focal point of the restaurant.

Boasting an array of signature international dishes from Chef Philippe Haddad, the selections include prime grilled steaks, seafood and vegetables served in authentic South African style and complemented by a globally sourced wine list.

The Cape Dutch menu, created by executive chef Philippe Haddad, highlights the signature South African-style braai, more commonly known as a grill. Menu selections include a handful of small plates to share, a variety of braai items including steak, whole fish and Cornish hen, braai sauces, side items and signature entrees flaunting chef Haddad’s Belgian touch.

OUR EXPERIENCE

The traditional South African braai is a unique twist to a Southern style BBQ. The word braaivleis is African for “roasted meat,” while the word braai (pronounced “bry”), is African for “barbecue” or “roast”. Similarly, both cultures take their cooking methods very seriously. Both barbecues and braais are seen as social events that draws crowds to a fire to take in the aromas, and share great stories and a good meal.

Cape Dutch captures the true spirit of the traditional South African braai from the serene decor to their authentic, yet innovative, dishes.

THE AMBIANCE.

Sheer. Comfort.

There are multiple areas in Cape Dutch to relax and enjoy a nice cocktail with friends. The bar area when walking in is cozy and comfortable with high back chairs, bright fluffed pillows and small tables placed along the walls surrounding the center bar.

Moving further into the restaurant is a large high-boy table with beautiful strobe lighting, perfect to accommodate your larger grouper for a special event or gathering of friends. It has a wonderful bird’s eye view of the open braai kitchen.

Moving past the kitchen seating, is the main dining room. The highlighted wood accents, striped plush pillows and modern lighting provides a gorgeous contrast to their white color palette.

Cape Dutch holds several additional secrets. There are long tables in private rooms, perfect to host bridal showers, birthday parties, or any type of special event.

Located on the upper floor is an additional private area, beautifully decorated with a round table and private bar.

Even with all of the gorgeous rooms showcased in Cape Dutch, their outdoor dining area is simply stunning. From the natural wood, and ultra comfortable seating and design, to the spectacular view of the skyline, this is my top pick for outdoor dining in 2017. It is truly unparalleled.

DINING.

Upon arrival we were served this amazing board of cheeses and charcuterie. The boards at Cape Dutch feature caperberries, peppadew peppers, tomato and ginger chutney, crostini, and cranberry walnut crackers. Cheese and meat offerings are subject to change and vary from top quality items such as spicy coppa, sweet coppa, toscana, salami, biltong sliced & paté.

Accompanying the cheese & charcuterie board was this delicious basket of Biltong.

Cape Dutch offers a burger of the month as well as their Braai burger featuring pickled green tomato, bacon, cheddar cheese, peri-peri sauce, brioche bun & pommes frites.

It was great to experience the menu through the eyes and palate of Cape Dutch owner and creator, restaurateur Justin Anthony.

Other favorites from the Braai included the Peri-Peri Chicken Breast…

…and this gorgeous whole Branzino with jalapeno sauce!

Wine was served throughout the tasting and this particular one was my favorite of the meal.

We finished our experience with two homemade desserts.

I really enjoyed this fun Callebaut Belgian Chocolate Soup highlighting
brittle, french bread sticks, hazelnut, and crispy rice. This was a great treat and fun to share with our table mates.

The grand finale brought a decadent bread pudding with fresh fruit and coulis.

This is just a sampling of the amazing things Cape Dutch has to offer. You can also find Chicago steaks, pastas, fresh seafood, duck, lamb, elk and even rabbit on their menu. If you’re looking for something really special and out of the ordinary, you’ll find it at Cape Dutch Braai + Bar.
